WHIP MEDIA AND NATPE PARTNER TO LAUNCH REPORT ON DEMAND FOR GLOBAL CONTENT IN THE U.S.

The NATPE Navigator Helps Buyers and Distributors Evaluate What Global Content is Most Popular Among U.S. Viewers To Make More Informed Content Acquisition and Sales Decisions

LOS ANGELES, September 22, 2021Whip Media, the leading enterprise software platform and data provider to the world’s largest entertainment organizations, and the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) today announced a partnership to provide a new data report for the entertainment industry with cross-platform insights on how U.S. audiences are consuming international TV series.

As TV series are traveling beyond borders to find new audiences, the new NATPE Navigator report highlights what original content produced outside the U.S. is among the most viewed domestically. The report provides intelligence to the industry to make more strategic buying and selling decisions as consumers are increasingly watching global TV series that have fresh talent and storytelling. Platforms are looking for new ways to capture the attention of viewers and differentiate themselves from competitors.

The NATPE report is compiled utilizing Whip Media’s proprietary global panel of consumers who report what programs they follow and watch and, further, how they feel about those shows. The panel is made up of 18 million viewers in over 170 countries and provides data on more than 4.5 million movie and TV episodes on 1,100 global platforms.

The NATPE Navigator ranks the top ten most viewed non-U.S. TV series among U.S. viewers. The report also provides a snapshot of a specific global title including who is watching it, how people feel about it, what else they are watching, and where that title is available on SVOD services globally based on real-time streaming availability data provided by Whip Media’s partner, BB, a leading media intelligence and content distribution researcher.

“We at NATPE are proud of our position as a resource for this industry that has seen countless changes to the global content marketplace and are always looking for new ways to provide additional insights and guidance to our members,” said JP Bommel, President and CEO of NATPE. “This partnership with Whip Media will do just that, and we are eager to see the results of their study as we continue to navigate the shifts our industry is going through.”

“With the growing consumer demand for new TV series and movies, content is no longer staying within its originating territories, but it’s still difficult to predict hits and what content will resonate with local viewers,” said Carol Hanley, President of Whip Media. “We’re excited to partner with NATPE to provide this new actionable data to the industry along with insights on how to fill gaps in their programming in a marketplace now unbound by geography.”

Starting today, the NATPE Navigator is available bi-monthly on the NATPE and Whip Media websites and will be distributed in the NATPE newsletter.

LA Virtual Screenings 2021: Marketplace, Education and Networking Platform Remains Open Until June 4

Los Angeles, CA – May 24, 2021 – After 10 successful days, LA Virtual Screenings (LAVS) has completed the official market days on Friday, May 21, however the platform will stay open for two more weeks, closing on June 4th. The platform includes the marketplace, educational conference sessions on-demand, and other networking tools.

LAVS was very well attended, as with the previous VS events, (4000 people, 8400 screenings), but the difference from previous VS events was a more intense usage of the platform: the buyers entered more times and viewed more screenings; many of those viewings being binge-watching. This reaction underlines how the VS format, which makes a focus on content and has no commitments for buyers, is strongly preferred by buyers.

The behavior graphics further shows the favorability of the platform by the buyers: more than 50% of them visited 50% or more of the booths, with many visiting 75% or more. On average, buyers visited 12 booths (60 pieces of content).

It is also interesting to analyze how the buyers spent time not only at the VS Market, but also in the other sections of the event. VS Billboard was one section seeing the largest amount of growth. Buyers often opened four to five of the 10 recommended pieces of content per visit. With the VS Figures rankings and the content lines at VS Market, 3,000 screenings were generated outside the booths, while 4,000 inside. In previous VS events these synergies were much weaker.

The Top 15 countries of attending buyers illustrates that LAVS is a fully global event. It generated amazing interest not only in America, but also in the major territories of Europe and Asia. Germany, France and Japan surpassed their previous buyer delegations.

VS Next, the educational conference portion of the events, was again a great success and provided insight into market trends beyond the content screenings. The conference covered a variety of topics including big OTTs, the streaming business, and eSports as one of the new topics.

During the first week, there was a very strong desire for Latin American content suppliers, following the tradition of LA Screenings. On the second week, European distributors (Germany, France, Spain and Turkey) placed behind the leaders (big US brands and big Latins). Platinum exhibitors are always on top, because they get more screenings per buyer visit.

In regards to the content demand, the last day ViacomCBS International Studios’ Parot took the lead, in a close race with Once we were six from Globo (Brazil). And after them, there were many contents from Gold and Bronze’ booths. The binge-watching buyers first visited the big brands, then second tier options and third, entered as many booths as they can.

Regarding genres, drama was clearly the leader, but with the pandemic it was notice a bigger demand for thrillers/suspense, as well as documentaries/factual and kids programming, which are easier to produce with safe protocols. Docs are the new trend in OTTs.

To conclude, LAVS 2021 has proven that virtual events can be a good experience, if companies make focus on what works in digital: screenings, panels, and ‘inbound’ marketing: the interaction with buyers surges from their preferences and requests, not before.

LA VIRTUAL SCREENINGS 2021: What do global buyers want?

  • More than 100 international buyers reveal insights into the main content trends in the global marketplace
  • Series, dramas and digital rights lead the buyer demand, according to the “Global Buyers Survey”
  • Scripted takes again the lead compared to Unscripted, but Unscripted has grown considerably compared to VS Autumn 2020
  • With less than a month since its launch, 500+ participants have already registered for LAVS 2021

Los Angeles, CA – March 25, 2021- Prensario International, a pioneering media company with almost 50 years in the entertainment business, and the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) today revealed some of the main trends in the global content marketplace, based on the answers provided by 100+ key decision makers that participated in Prensario’s annual “Global Buyer Survey”.

Acquisitions, production and programming executives, including those from streamers, TV networks and producers, from all around the world, completed the poll and provided fresh, updated information on this season’s trends.

The majority of the answers came from North and South America (35%), followed by Europe (30%), APAC-MENA-Africa (20%), and worldwide platforms (15%). Buyers were able to select more than one answer on the four different questions proposed. 8 to 13-episode series was the top selected format, while drama remains to be the most requested genre worldwide.

The survey shed light over what type of rights, formats and genres buyers will be looking for LAVS, which takes place on May 11-20. The market is taking excellent shape with 500+ participants registered, from which +400 are buyers from 60+ countries.

When asked the “Type of Company” the buyers represented, SVOD was the top option with 55%, followed by Free TV with 47.5% and Pay TV with 37.5%. AVOD (32.5%), TVOD (30%) and Producers (25%) rounded out the responses, while 10% of the answers have come from Telcos/ISP/Mobile. There was also a new category this year, tech companies (apps), which added 5%.

In terms of the destination for the acquired content, “Digital Rights”, which covers business models such as SVOD, AVOD, TVOD and Telcos/ISPs/Mobile/Tech, have overtaken linear, free and pay, television. Moreover, following the individual answers it can be asserted that there is a large synergy between platforms. The majority of the linear TV buyers are also acquiring rights for their digital platforms on web, apps and other type of ad-supported services.

When asking buyers about “Type of Content”, 13-episodes series is by far the #1 format with 72.5% of the answers, followed by Movies with 55%, Formats with 45% and Miniseries with 37.5%. As for Linear TV, the classic telenovela of 60+ episodes continues to be relevant with 30% of the answers. Short format only received 17.5% of the answers.

Three clear changes have been noticed in this question, compared to VS Autumn 2020:

  • Series remain the top format of the industry;
  • Movies have grown from third to second position in demand;
  • Formats have skyrocketed: they did appear in the ranking last year, and this year have come in as the third largest option, topping miniseries.

By “Genres”, Drama was top answer in VS Autumn 2020, followed by Thriller and Suspense/Action. This Spring, the difference from the first to the second and third option is minimum. Drama received 70% of the answers, while Thriller and Suspense/Action 65% each, followed by Comedy (50%).

All in all, Scripted programming is the most in demand genre but, again in this question, Unscripted confirms it has strong momentum coming in with 39% of the responses. Other big demands are Documentaries/Factual (35%) Kids& Teens (22.5%), Paranormal (15%) and Education (10%). But before all them, another thematic stands strong: Family content with 37.5%

With less than a month from its official launch, LA Virtual Screenings is already taking the attention of the global market. More than 500 executives from 60+ countries have already registered, and from them, 430 are buyers, including TV Channels, OTTs and Producers, but also investors, tech companies, agencies and advertising/brands.

Free registration is open and content professionals from around the world are welcome to participate and live the VS Experience, by registering at the website www.virtualscreenings.com for free.

Kids Insights Announces Membership With NATPE

Kids Insights becomes a NATPE member, sparking a new arrangement to promote research in the content industry.

MANCHESTER, 19 October 2020 – Kids Insights, part of The Insights People, is delighted to announce membership with The National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE). Kids Insights – part of The Insights People – specializes in research and insights on kids and their ecosystems. It surveys more than 5,000 children every week, across five continents and 13 countries, or more than 277,000 children a year.

NATPE is the largest US-based global content association and professional membership organization, which is committed to leading the future of content. The association has roots dating back more than 50 years and has a variety of platforms at its disposable to execute its content strategies. Marketplaces and conferences, screenings, awards, and networking events – including NATPE V-Fronts™, NATPE Miami Marketplace + Conference, L.A. Screenings Independents, NATPE Budapest International and NATPE Streaming Plus amongst others – are organized by NATPE to meet the needs of its evolving members and constituents.

Kids Insights becoming a NATPE member will continue to highlight the importance of research in the content industry. The collaboration is just the beginning as Kids Insights aims to predict future content trends for NATPE members. By providing reliable data on the attitudes, behaviors and consumption for the new generation of content consumers, means the content industry companies will be able to tailor their advertising, content, licencing, marketing, product and sales strategies.

Based on Kids Insights data, since lockdown, the amount of American kids watching more online TV streaming and video viewing platforms has increased by 5%. Interestingly, kids’ favorite TV shows can also influence purchasing habits. Nearly half (44%) of kids aged 3-12 purchase toys related to their favorite TV show. This opens avenues for exciting licensing and merchandising opportunities for brands.

Now is the perfect time for Kids Insights and NAPTE to join together, prior to the launch of NATPE’s Analytics & Addressability conference, a virtual event held at the NAB Show in New York. The event is being sponsored by Kids Insights as part of the new relationship with NATPE. The aim of the event is to discuss how usable intelligence attracts viewers and drives engagement – a topic that Kids Insights can provide an abundance of knowledge on.

Nick Richardson, founder and CEO of The Insights People says:

“We are delighted to be working with NATPE. With the after Coronavirus (AC) world forcing events to go online, NATPE launched NATPE Virtual and teamed up with renowned trade fair, NAB. This was an attractive package for us, as we continue to expand our reach in the US market, and at the same time, we feel we have a lot to offer the members of NATPE. We are excited to see what the Analytics & Addressability conference brings to the table on 22 October.”

NATPE is not only excited to be welcoming Kids Insights but is also happy to be working alongside the NAB Show for the first time.

Under the terms of this new arrangement, NATPE members will be entitled to an exclusive subscription discount for The Insights People services, which includes bespoke projects, regular independent insights-led content, reports and online sessions to facilitate wider industry conversations.

Kids Insights will be hosting a case study-based webinar with its US client, PBS Kids during the Analytics & Addressability conference on 22 October. To register to attend the conference, please visit: www.natpe.com/analytics-and-addressability/attend

The Manchester based company have just released its inaugural Trends Across the Planet report which identifies some of the key trends in the kids, tweens and teens marketplace and is available to download at: www.kidsinsights.com/natpe

NATPE and CEETV announce winner of PITCH & PLAY LIVE! 2020

LOS ANGELES, CA | August 8, 2020 – NATPE and CEETV are delighted to announce that the winning format of the fifth edition of PITCH & PLAY LIVE!, as voted for by an expert jury during NATPE Virtual Budapest, is Russia’s CHILDREN VS. ADULTS.

CHILDREN VS. ADULTS is a family show in which two generations compete with each other. One team consists of children from 10 to 16 years old and the other team consists of their parents or other close relative of 50 or more years old. In each competition adults answer to tricky questions about the twenty first century and children answer to questions about the last century. Also, the participants guess stars, songs, movies and things from the time which is unfamiliar to them. A team that has the highest score will go to an unusual quest room. To get the main prize the participants will have to complete all trials in a limited time.

The winning format owner receives complimentary registration and accommodation for NATPE Miami Marketplace + Conference 2021, as well as a series of development meetings with leading distributors in attendance.

The winning format was selected among three finalists, which included CHILDREN VS. ADULTS (CTC, Russia); reality show FASHION DESIGNERS (Kanal 2, Estonia) and entertainment format MADE IN QUARANTINE (RTL Klub, Hungary).

Following live presentations by the creators of all three shortlisted formats during the PITCH & PLAY LIVE! session, CHILDREN VS. ADULTS was chosen as the winner by an expert jury consisting of Daiva Andrade Gonzalez, Senior Content Acquisitions Manager, TV3 Group, Izzet Pino, Founder and CEO, Global Agency, and Taliah Shahar, Head of International Sales, Acquisitions and Partnerships, United Studios of Israel.

This year PITCH & PLAY LIVE!’s top three formats were shortlisted from a selection of ten brand-new original formats from CEE and EMEA. Each of the ten formats was evaluated based on three criteria: originality (how original is the idea for the format); universality (does the format idea show flexibility for changes and development) and internationality (does the format have the potential to be sold internationally). A selection committee, comprising industry professionals reviewed each format and voted in all three criteria with scores from 1 to 5. The final ranking was determined from the accumulated sum of all scores of the five selection committee members.

NATPE Budapest International will still take place at the InterContinental Hotel in Budapest, Hungary.  Last year, the annual Marketplace, Screenings + Conference included attendees from 70+ countries, including more than 470 buyers and more than 160 promotional and production companies.

NATPE Streaming Plus is following up on a very successful inaugural event in Los Angeles, California last year, where it had major streaming players like CBS All Access, Hulu, Netflix, Pluto TV and YouTube all take the stage at the conference. The one-day event will again be held at the W Hollywood on the newly rescheduled date.

NATPE Miami, the organization’s annual tent-pole event will, as planned, take place January 19-21, 2021 at the Fontainebleau Resort in Miami, Florida.

“Our first thoughts and prayers go to the NATPE community of those affected by this devastating crisis.  From a business perspective, NATPE recognizes that the industry faces unprecedented marketplace challenges; we want to be part of the solution and bring to bear experiences that will help our constituency continue to do business to their fullest potential,” said JP Bommel, President and CEO, NATPE.

Prensario, NATPE and Events TM Team Up to Launch “Virtual Screenings 2020”

Prensario International, in association with NATPE and Events TM to create “Virtual Screenings 2020,” a digital market that will replace the LA Screenings and with efforts to expand to other cancelled markets

Los Angeles, CA – March 20, 2020 – Partners in the project include Prensario International, a pioneering publication with almost 50 years in the entertainment business, the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE), and Events TM’s Isabella Márquez, the traditional organizer of the suites for LA Screenings Independents at the Intercontinental Hotel. The organized e-meetings will recover the personal interaction and flow of business lost to the content industry from the canceling trade shows and marketplaces.

Nicolas Smirnoff, director, Prensario International, explained: “Virtual Screenings 2020 will take place the same days that LA Screenings, both independent and majors: from May 12 to 21. It will target about 5,000 key buyers from around the world, who will access to content screenings of the main providers of the international market, in a very easy and friendly way.”

Isabella Márquez, CEO, Events TM, added: “Now is a time for us to be creative and find new ways to come together. The desire for content, which has never been higher than in 2020 has not changed just because of the world’s event. I am so happy to work with such amazing partners to present an alternative solution to this year’s LA Screenings.”

JP Bommel, CEO, NATPE, concluded: “My first thought goes to the safety and health of the distributors, buyers and partners who were planning to attend LA Screenings Independent in May, they are a part of our family. At NATPE, our mission is to be the indispensable resource in the evolution of content as the conduit to connectivity, business insights and opportunity. In these challenging times, I am pleased that we will be able to fulfill that promise by delivering a virtual alternative to the market through this great partnership with Prensario and Events TM. We want our clients and partners to know that we are in this crisis together and we’ll continue to find ways for them to do business.”

The interface of the platform aims to be very simple. Buyers will register themselves for free to allow access to a home page with the logos of the distributors. Once there, they will be able to watch trailers, previews or complete episodes of the contents offered, along with the company information and complementary digital tools and services.

All global distributors are invited to participate. This includes the Hollywood studios to independent producers, also leading distributors in Latin America, Turkey, Europe and Asia.

“The response from the industry has been great. In fact, we launched the initiative pushed by many customer requests. We want not only to replace the cancelled markets, but also to create new, empowered tools for the digital era. The ‘Virtual Screenings’ must recover the business flow and add important digital value’, concluded Smirnoff.

I am grateful for the laughter we shared with Janet and that we got to work together on important issues. As you said to the students it’s not who you know but who knows you, in that respect I am honored to have shared those moments with you. I will miss you forever, you are in my heart but you took a piece of all of us with you today.”
