NATPE Miami 2016 Domestic and International Buyer, Exhibitor and General Attendance Pacing Well Ahead of Previous Market and Conference, Confirming Expansion to Eden Roc Miami Beach Resort

2nd Annual NATPE REALITY Breakthrough Awards Finalists Revealed and Howie Mandel Returns as Host

LOS ANGELES, December 2, 2015– NATPE President and CEO Rod Perth announced today, details regarding NATPE Miami 2016. Growth remains the dominant theme with domestic and international buyer, exhibitor and general attendance pacing well ahead of last year. Perth confirmed expansion of the market and conference to the Eden Roc Miami Beach Resort to accommodate the overall growth, which is scheduled to take place in Miami ‪Jan. 19-21 at both the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc Miami Beach resorts. The conference and market will bring together every sector of the industry under the banner theme, “Be Creative. Be Fearless. Be Ready.”

Perth also announced the finalists for the 2nd Annual Breakthrough Awards and the return of host Howie Mandel. Initial session details for NATPE 2016 were also revealed.

“We are delighted that with all of our most important numbers tracking ahead of last year’s capacity turnout, we have moved to substantially increase our physical space in 2016 by expanding to the Eden Roc next door to the Fontainebleau,” said NATPE President and CEO, Rod Perth. “The increase in exhibition sales and expanded events reflects the tremendous growth we are seeing throughout the conference.”

There are 29 new exhibitors from virtually every sector of the business attending the conference for the first time. Because of this demand, Perth also noted that all of the Fontainebleau tower suites have sold out with very few booths and meeting tables still available on both the Market Floor and within the Fontaine Ballroom, respectively.

This year’s conference features sessions and events with a focus on scripted television, including a session on the first day titled “The Business of Scripted.”  Within the Storytellers and Shaping of Pop Culture track, NATPE has lined-up a slate of intimate conversations showcasing major creative forces spanning numerous genres of television. Powerful combinations set to take the stage in Miami this year include chats with: Legends Norman Lear and Quincy Jones; non-scripted talents Kris Jenner and Todd Chrisley; showrunners Graham Yost (The Americans), John Eisendrath (The Blacklist) and Howard Gordon (Homeland); and Michelle Ashford (Showrunner, Masters of Sex), Ilene Chaiken (Showrunner, Empire), and Sarah Treem (Creator, The Affair).

In an environment in which advertisers are seeking access to the earliest stages of content development, the Masters of Marketing track at NATPE opens up the conversation about the opportunities, challenges and new business models around marrying creative visions with brand marketing objectives. An example of this includes a session entitled “What Creators Want to Say, What Brands Need to See”, which features Dan Harmon (Writer/Creator, Community), Marc Cherry (Executive Producer, Desperate Housewives and Devious Maids), Mitch Hurwitz (Writer/Producer, Arrested Development), Kristin Patrick (Global CMO, PepsiCo, Inc.), David Beebe (VP Global Creative & Content Marketing, Marriott Int’l) and more, together on one stage.

After a successful debut last year, NATPE REALITY is back and expanding from one to two days. Officially the first reality and formats market of the year, NATPE REALITY will be the epicenter of the non-scripted world with a programming track overflowing with big names and breakthrough ideas. NATPE has curated this dedicated track to provide conference attendees with access to reality executives, cutting edge information and insights on the latest trends in reality programming.

A highlight of this two-day track is the 2nd Annual NATPE REALITY Breakthrough Awards.  This luncheon event will honor those reality programs that “broke through the clutter and made noise” in the preceding year becoming part of the cultural conversation and generally altering our perception of what’s possible in the genre. Perth also announced Howie Mandel (America’s Got Talent) as the returning host of the award show along with the following finalists in five categories:

COMPETITION – Alone; American Ninja Warrior; Lip Sync Battle; MasterChef Junior; Shark Tank; The Voice

DOCUSOAP – Alaskan Bush People; Chrisley Knows Best; I Am Cait; Real Housewives of Beverly Hills; Vanderpump Rules; Wahlburgers

GAME SHOW – @Midnight; Billy On The Street; Celebrity Family Feud; Hellevator; Hollywood Game Night

REALITY – Catfish; Hard Knocks; Married At First Sight; Naked & Afraid; Project Greenlight

FACTUAL – Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown; Last Week Tonight With John Oliver; The Daily Show; The Jinx; Vice

Platforms are changing and NATPE continues to provide access to the shared knowledge needed to anticipate how the industry is evolving.  One of the many highlights of the Platform Accelerated track is the session “I Want What They’re Having,” featuring Chris Williams (Chief Audience Officer, Maker Studios), Chris Jacquemin (Agent, Digital Media, WME), Jordan Gilbert (Head of Digital Programming, Lionsgate) and Harley Morenstein (Creator, Epic Meal Time). The panel will bring together this accomplished group to discuss how to bridge the divide between traditional and digital in views, audience appeal and gravitas.

NATPE’s continued emphasis on digital and mobile has expanded to include a broader focus across the conference. In the Game Changers track, digital is on display in “The Rise of New OTT Platforms” with David Freeman (Co-Head of Digital Talent, Packaging, CAA),Seth Laderman (EVP & GM, Comic Con SVOD, Lionsgate), Evan Shapiro (Executive VP, Digital Enterprises, NBCUniversal), Jimmy Maymann (President, Content & Consumer Brands, AOL), Floris Bauer (Senior Advisor, Otter Media) and Ben Relles (Head of Comedy and Unscripted, YouTube).

One of the ways NATPE will address the importance of mobile in the content business includes the session “Cracking the Mobile Code and Its Perceived Return on Investment”, which features Marcel Reichart (EVP RTL Digital Hub, RTL Group, and EVP, Digital Development and Partnerships, Bertelsmann), Allie Kline (CMO, AOL), and Tom Pickett (CEO of Ellation/AT&T), for a sharply focused look into the future of mobile monetization.

Andy Kaplan Elected Chairman of NATPE

Los Angeles, CA (August 25, 2015) – NATPE President and CEO Rod Perth today announced that Andy Kaplan, President, Worldwide Networks for Sony Pictures Television (SPT), has been elected chairman of the board of NATPE, effective immediately. Mr. Kaplan previously served as vice chairman of the board. He succeeds Jordan Levin who served as NATPE’s chairman for four years.

“Andy is one of the most respected television executives in the business and we are delighted that he will serve as our new chairman,” Mr. Perth said. “Andy’s extensive knowledge of the domestic and international TV and burgeoning VOD and subscription VOD markets, as well as the multi-platform online entertainment network space, will provide NATPE with an enormously valuable perspective as we further expand our global reach. His vast expertise in Latin America, Asia and India further strengthens our relationships with content creators from those important regions. He is an incredible asset to our association.”

Mr. Perth added, “I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the extraordinary contributions Jordan Levin has made to NATPE.  Jordan has contributed so much to our organization in terms of his time, wise counsel and dedication.  We are extremely grateful to have had his leadership for so many years.”

Mr. Kaplan said of his new role, “I have enjoyed my long association with NATPE as a member and, most recently, as an officer and member of the executive committee.  I am honored that the board has elected me to lead this vital, relevant industry association and I look forward to working closely with Rod and our new COO JP Bommel.  With Rod’s dedication to enhancing content creation and distribution across the entire television and digital ecosystem at our annual global markets and conferences, NATPE is well positioned for the future. I also deeply appreciate the commitment Jordan has made to NATPE and am delighted he will remain a member of our executive committee.”

In his current role as president, Worldwide Networks, Sony Pictures Television (SPT), Kaplan heads SPT’s global cable and satellite television networks and investments, as well as broadband, video-on-demand and subscription video-on-demand services from the company’s headquarters in Culver City, California. Globally, Kaplan oversees SPT’s branded networks AXN, Sony Entertainment Television (SET), Sony Channel, ANIMAX, and ONE, as well as a portfolio of channels in India.  He also oversees Crackle, the studio’s multi-platform video entertainment network available in 21 countries. Domestically, Kaplan oversees Sony Movie Channel (SPT’s first U.S. multi-platform television network), as well as Cine Sony Television and the broadcast digi-net getTV. He is also responsible for SPT’s equity interest in multimedia entertainment company GSN, which offers original and classic game programming and competitive entertainment via its 80-million subscriber television network and online game sites. He continues to lead the overall growth of SPT’s network portfolio by expanding the channels’ footprint and building new network brands worldwide, in several countries spanning Asia, Europe, Latin America and Africa.

JP Bommel Named Managing Director And Chief Operating Officer of NATPE

Los Angeles, CA. (August 7, 2015) – JP Bommel, former vice president of business development, entertainment for Reed Midem, with extensive experience with global media and entertainment firms, has been named managing director and chief operating officer of NATPE. The announcement was made today by Rod Perth, President and CEO of the international non-profit association. Mr. Bommel will officially join NATPE in September.

The announcement of Mr. Bommel’s appointment follows NATPE’s disclosure in March of this year that Mr. Perth was extending his contract through February 2016 as head of NATPE during which he would oversee the transition to new leadership and then join NATPE’s Board of Directors at the expiration of his contract.  This was all part of a strategic succession plan designed to sustain the organization’s momentum, and to ensure a seamless transition.

“Over the last three years, NATPE has experienced a re-birth, and the response to our recent events is extremely gratifying,” Mr. Perth stated. “Industry leaders that represent diverse yet increasingly interdependent businesses realize the international benefit and relevance of participating with NATPE, because they value our complete dedication to content. Without a doubt, content across every platform is the single most important factor in the growth of the global entertainment community.”

Mr. Perth continued, “I am very pleased that after interviewing many candidates, the Board and I have selected JP to fill this newly-created position. He is highly qualified to serve NATPE and its members in the most effective ways possible. JP and I will be working closely together so that he is able to learn every aspect of our association. JP has already served in a consultancy capacity with our organization, so that experience provides a head start on the learning curve.  He has talent, experience and drive, and I’m confident he will be instrumental in continuing our commitment to being nimble and always dedicated to content.”

Prior to joining NATPE, Mr. Bommel was the founder of Barton Creek Intl., which developed global events and created strategic partnerships and, before that, he served as vice president, business development, entertainment for Reed Midem from 2005-2013, where he was responsible for significant sales activity and new business development for entertainment conferences such as MIPTV/MIPCOM and MIDEM (Music). He previously also served as vice president, global marketing for EMI/Capitol, Sony Music and BMG. Mr. Bommel received his education in Paris and holds both U.S. and EU citizenship.

NATPE is a global, non-profit organization committed to serving as a catalyst for the content revolution. Evolving to meet the needs of a changing media landscape, NATPE, through its many activities including exclusive videos, live streaming events and vibrant annual markets, is at the nexus of the multiplatform content world.
