NATPE Sets New 2020 Dates For NATPE Budapest International (August 25-27) And NATPE Streaming Plus (September 15)

LOS ANGELES, April 7, 2020 – The National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE), the premier global business association for content producers, distributors, streamers and buyers across all platforms today announced the rescheduling of NATPE Budapest International to August 25th through 27th, 2020, and NATPE Streaming Plus to September 15, 2020 as a result of Covid-19. 

NATPE Budapest International will still take place at the InterContinental Hotel in Budapest, Hungary.  Last year, the annual Marketplace, Screenings + Conference included attendees from 70+ countries, including more than 470 buyers and more than 160 promotional and production companies. 

NATPE Streaming Plus is following up on a very successful inaugural event in Los Angeles, California last year, where it had major streaming players like CBS All Access, Hulu, Netflix, Pluto TV and YouTube all take the stage at the conference. The one-day event will again be held at the W Hollywood on the newly rescheduled date. 

NATPE Miami, the organization’s annual tent-pole event will, as planned, take place January 19-21, 2021 at the Fontainebleau Resort in Miami, Florida.

The Awards Dinner Gala is Set to Take Place During NATPE Miami 2020 on Wednesday, January 22nd to benefit the NATPE Educational Foundation

LOS ANGELES, November 21, 2019 – The National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) announced today that the recipients of NATPE’s 17th Annual Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Awards are award-winning actress Christine Baranski, ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke, prolific television creator, producer and writer Courtney A. Kemp, President of NBCUniversal’s Telemundo Global Studios, Marcos Santana, and Chairman, WarnerMedia News and Sports & President, CNN Worldwide Jeff Zucker. They will receive the prestigious awards during the NATPE Miami 2020 convention during a dinner gala on January 22, 2020, at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach. The dinner, with its A-list attendees, benefits the NATPE Educational Foundation, with a portion going to the Broadcasters Federation of America (BFOA). Bob Holmes is returning as Executive Producer of the show.

Named in honor of Brandon Tartikoff, one of television’s greatest programmers, the Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Awards were created to recognize an exceptional ensemble of professionals who exhibit extraordinary passion, leadership, independence and vision in content programming. Brandon had an unmatched love for television, life and family. He will always be remembered among the most gifted programmers of his generation.

Past honorees include Steven Bochco, James Burrows, Jon Feltheimer, Jane Fonda, Bob Greenblatt, David Kelly, Norman Lear, Chuck Lorre, Regis Philbin, Peter Roth, Josh Sapan, Ted Sarandos, Dick Wolf, and Betty White, among others. Proceeds from the program will be donated to the NATPE Educational Foundation and the Broadcasters Foundation of America.

The NATPE Educational Foundation was launched in 1978 by the late Lew Klein to promote educational activities and focuses on faculty development, recognizing that improving faculty knowledge translates into a better classroom experiences for students and thus has impacted thousands of students, some of whom now have illustrious careers in the industry.

Christine Baranski is an Emmy, two-time Tony, Screen Actors Guild, Drama Desk and American Comedy Award winner. Baranski currently stars as Diane Lockhart in the critically acclaimed CBS All Access original series “The Good Fight,” a role she originated on CBS’ “The Good Wife.” Other television credits include her Emmy-winning role on “Cybill,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Frasier.” Film credits include: “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”, “A Bad Moms Christmas,” “Mamma Mia!” “Trolls,” “Miss Sloane,” “Into the Woods,” “Chicago,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Bowfinger,” “Bulworth,” “Cruel Intentions” and “The Birdcage,” among others. She will next be seen in the Netflix feature “Christmas on the Square.” A graduate of the Juilliard School, Baranski received her big break in Tom Stoppard’s hit Broadway comedy “The Real Thing,” directed by Mike Nichols, for which she won a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award.

Karey Burke is responsible for all development, programming, casting, marketing, business affairs and scheduling operations for ABC prime time and late-night. She reports to Dana Walden, chairman, Disney Television Studios and ABC Entertainment. One year into her tenure, Burke has developed some the most buzzed-about live events of the year, including “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s ‘All in the Family’ and ‘The Jeffersons,’” which has reached more than 23 million total viewers on broadcast alone, and won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Live), the only major category win this year for a broadcast network; and “The Wonderful World of Disney presents: The Little Mermaid Live!” – the highest-rated live broadcast musical in four years. Additionally, The Oscars and CMA Awards have posted double digits gains vs. the prior year. For the first time ever, “The Bachelorette” was the No. 1 TV series of the summer, and the network’s “Summer Fun & Games” drove ABC to regain the title as the No. 1 network for summer for the first time in 24 years.  Burke is also delivering on her promise of female-forward programming, with new series “Stumptown,” “Emergence” and the No. 1 new comedy of the season, “mixed-ish”; all three shows rank in the top five new fall series (based on L7). Prior to her role as President of ABC Entertainment, Burke was executive vice president, Programming and Development at Freeform, where she was charged with overseeing all scripted and unscripted development and current original programming, in addition to casting and talent development. Burke was also responsible for creating and executing a cohesive programming strategy for multiplatform distribution, and accelerating and amplifying the high-quality, brand-defining content for which Freeform is known. During her tenure, she had great success building on Freeform’s strong foundation, delivering the No. 1 new cable comedy and No. 1 new cable drama of 2018 for the network’s target audience of W18-34 with “grown-ish” and “Siren.” She also continued Freeform’s dominance as the No. 1 most social cable channel.

Courtney A. Kemp is a highly regarded creator, showrunner, and producer in the television industry. Kemp is the creative force behind Starz’s critically acclaimed gritty New York drama, Power which is currently in its sixth and final season. Under Kemp’s fearless leadership as series creator and showrunner, Power has consistently over-performed in viewership and continues to elevate itself above its competition in an oversaturated television landscape. Power, Starz’s most watched original series to date, currently boasts an average weekly multiplatform viewership of over 10 million, making it the second-most-watched series on premium cable. While the series will soon wrap up its sixth and final season, the Power cinematic universe that Kemp has built will continue for many years to come, with the first spinoff series, Power Book II: Ghost, written and created by Kemp and starring superstar Mary J. Blige, set to debut next year.

Marcos Santana is the President of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises’ Telemundo Global Studios. In this role, Santana leads the division’s domestic and international scripted production units including Telemundo Studios, Telemundo International Studios and Telemundo International, as well as all of the division’s co-production partnerships. Under his direction, each entity produces its own unique brand of content geared to reach distinctive audiences.

Jeff Zucker was named Chairman, WarnerMedia News and Sports in March, 2019.  He has also served as President of CNN Worldwide since 2013.  Zucker oversees all of WarnerMedia’s live programming, including all divisions of CNN Worldwide and Turner Sports.  At CNN, that includes the US television network, CNN International, HLN, all of CNN’s digital properties, and Great Big Story. His sports portfolio includes Turner Sports, Bleacher Report, and the AT&T Regional Sports Networks.

Khan is an acclaimed digital thought leader and entrepreneur, who founded two award-winning companies, the global management consulting firm, MAG, and the Content Value Management platform, Mediamorph (recently sold). Pedersen leads all3media International, which works with television producers to co-finance television programs and is a leading global TV sales business. Shah leads Verance, an inventor of next generation movie, music and television technologies that set the industry standard for content measurement, enhancement and protection. He recently led the company through a major expansion from film into television.

Pierluigi Gazzolo to Receive Inaugural Premio Ícono TV Latina Award at NATPE Miami 2020

World Screen will present Viacom International Media Networks’ Pierluigi Gazzolo with the Premio Ícono TV Latina award at the NATPE Miami Marketplace + Conference in January 2020.

Los Angeles, CA, August 14, 2019  –  Gazzolo is the president of Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Americas and executive VP of Nickelodeon International. He is being honored for his significant contributions to the Latin American media industry over the course of his career.

The award will be presented, in partnership with NATPE, during the conference’s annual Latin American Summit in Miami on January 23 following a one-on-one discussion with World Screen’s group editorial director, Anna Carugati. 

Gazzolo is responsible for driving the ongoing expansion of VIMN’s portfolio across Latin America, including networks (among them MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and Paramount Channel), the Noggin and Pluto TV businesses and Viacom International Studios. During his tenure VIMN acquired Telefe and Porta dos Fundos and dramatically expanded its content creation efforts in the region. He also serves as the Nickelodeon brand lead for all markets outside of the U.S., with oversight of its centralized programming, marketing, creative, consumer products and international program sales teams.

LOS ANGELES, July 17, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — The Omni Cultural TV Fest (OCTVF) in partnership with NATPE (National Association of Television Program Executives) announced today that submissions for 2020 are now open. 

Filmmakers who submit early will have a head start in getting their projects seen by industry executives. The festival acts as a bridge to merge content creators with industry professionals.

Produced by Kiki Melendez of Latin Hollywood Films and Cindy Cowan Entertainment, this unique multicultural platform for independent content producers provides an avenue for promoting new ideas in all genres for television and OTT platforms.

Thus far, the festival has been instrumental in getting five projects distributed through ShortsTV,  distribution deals through Maverick Entertainment, meetings with Abrams Artists Agency, pitch meetings with Cindy Cowan and All 3 Media, and requests for content from prominent networks and studios. OCTVF received support from Disney, Nickelodeon, Viacom, A&E, Lifetime, The History Channel, The Nacelle Company, CBS Diversity, NBC/Telemundo, Spectrum TV1, WIF, NYWIFT, HRTS and Vimeo. NATPE has also designated an OCTVF tab on their website so that buyers will have easy access to view the 2019 selections and winners in all the categories.

In its inaugural event at the landmark Egyptian Theater in May 2019, OCTVF made an indelible impact on the industry, receiving 5-star ratings and garnering critical acclaim from filmmakers, sponsors, partners, executives and attendees.

This year, OCTVF will be going on tour through Miami, NYC, San Francisco, San Diego, and LA to generate buzz prior to the grand event which is set for the first week of June 2020.

CITVC Signs Partnership Deal With NATPE

June 19th, 2019 Beijing, China & Los, Angeles, CA U.S.A.: China International Television Corporation (“CITVC”), the international business division of China Media Group, announced the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) for cooperation with the National Association of Television Program Executives (“NATPE”) U.S.-based global content association and professional membership organization.

SANATORIUM OF LOVE – Six elderly ladies and six senior gentlemen, who differ in character, personality, passion and life experience, set off to a picturesque health resort in the mountains, where for three weeks they are given the opportunity to get to know one another and experience new adventures, also related to the sphere of feelings. All the participants have one thing in common – they are lonely and want to change it. The program aims to show the problem of discrimination against older people and to present the autumn of life in a colourful and warm way, emphasizing the value and dignity of a human being regardless of their age.

The winning format owner receives complimentary registration and accommodation for NATPE Miami Marketplace + Conference 2020, as well as a series of development meetings with leading distributors in attendance.

The winning format was selected from a shortlist of three formats, which included SANATORIUM OF LOVE (TVP, Poland); KID COOKS OF SLOVENIA (POP TV, Slovenia) and MYSTERIES IN THE SPOTLIGHT (Antena 1, Romania).

Following live presentations by the creators of all three shortlisted formats during the PITCH & PLAY LIVE! session at NATPE Budapest International, SANATORIUM OF LOVE was chosen by an expert jury consisting of Andrea Gavacova, Format Sales Director for Central and Eastern Europe, Fremantle; Peter Nunez, Founder, NUNEZ NFE and Nick Smith, Executive Vice President, Formats at All3media International.

This year PITCH & PLAY LIVE!’s top three formats were shortlisted from a selection of ten brand-new original formats from CEE and EMEA.  Each of the ten formats was evaluated based on three criteria: originality (how original is the idea for the format); universality (does the format idea show flexibility for changes and development) and internationality (does the format have the potential to be sold internationally). A selection committee, comprising industry professionals reviewed each format and voted in all three criteria with scores from 1 to 5. The final ranking was determined from the accumulated sum of all scores of the five selection committee members.

Remembering Lew Klein

The Passing of NATPE’s Founder Lew Klein

NATPE Statement from Chairman Andy Kaplan.

“It is with the deepest regret that we inform you that Lew Klein (91), NATPE’s founder and guiding light, has passed away. Lew was the soul and inspiration for NATPE and was tireless in his work and support of both NATPE and the NATPE Foundation, which he founded and served as president until his passing.

Our condolences go out to Janet, Lew’s wife, who was by his side for a lifetime and always present at NATPE events, and to Lew’s entire family.  We will dearly miss his wise counsel, smiling face and his class. He was one of a kind.”

I am grateful for the laughter we shared with Janet and that we got to work together on important issues. Los Angeles, June 13, 2019 — The world of broadcast television would be a different place without Lew Klein, who started his career in the 1950’s in the programming department of WFIL (now WPVI) in Philadelphia. From 1984 to 1993, Lew served as President of Gateway Communications, Inc., which owned four CBS affiliate stations in New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. He was the executive producer of the popular dance show “American Bandstand” and of the award-winning series “Frontiers of Knowledge and College News Conference.”

Following his passion for teaching a new generation about the industry, Mr. Klein held the position of Adjunct Professor at the School of Communications at Temple University in Philadelphia for 65 years. Klein was honored several times at Temple for his service to the university and in 2017 the university’s School of Media and Communication was renamed the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication.

Mr. Klein was the recipient of NATPE’s President’s Award and the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters Gold Medal. He was also named “Broadcaster of the Year” by the Broadcast Pioneer’s Philadelphia Chapter and earned the Distinguished Education Service Award from the Broadcast Education Association.

Mr. Klein is the founder and former president of NATPE, the world’s largest non-profit content association, and the founder and president of the NATPE Educational Foundation.

Mr. Klein is survived by his wife, Janet, his children Ellen and Stephen, granddaughter Anna and her husband, John, and great-grandchildren Oscar and Miriam. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Klein (date to be determined).

The event supports independent producers as they present projects directly to television and internet executives.

Los Angeles, CA/ Feb. 12, 2019 — The Omni-Cultural TV Festival, in partnership with the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE), will debut on May 1st, 2019 at the iconic Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. The event provides a groundbreaking multicultural platform for independent content creators and producers to pitch new projects directly to legitimate buyers.     The day will include screenings, panels and networking opportunities, culminating with an award show and gala.

Melendez and Cowan joined forces in October of 2018 to launch this

Additionally, she financed the film Traffic, which went on to win four Oscars. Cowan has recently signed a deal with Sony Pictures and has several other projects set up at various studios. Cowan has plans to branch into the TV space and will be announcing a series very soon.

Melendez, along with JEAR Entertainment, previously hosted the Latin Hollywood Films Upfronts in New York and LA with which attracted more than 1,800 industry professionals.

Recipients were announced at a special luncheon ceremony hosted by Kellie Pickler and Ben Aaron during annual NATPE MIAMI Marketplace and Conference

Los Angeles, CA – December 4, 2018 – The National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) announced today the appointment of Charles Weiss as SVP, Business Development. The announcement comes a few months before NATPE Miami commences in January of 2019. The three-day event will take place from January 22nd until the 24th at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami and has confirmed keynote addresses from newly tapped NBC Co-Chairmen George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy.

Weiss joins NATPE from Future Plc where he served as Vice President, Group Publisher for Broadcasting & Cable and Multichannel News. There, he successfully presided over their advertising sales division and extensive event portfolio, including the B&C Hall of Fame, MCN Wonder Women, and NYC Television Week.  His overarching responsibilities included sales management, business development, client media solutions, custom event sponsorship, digital transition, new platform innovation, marketing and strategic content.

Weiss currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Broadcaster’s Foundation of America. Prior to Broadcasting & Cable and Multichannel News, Weiss held executive-level positions at Backstage, Nielsen Business Media and Reed Business Information. In his previous roles, Weiss was responsible not only for sales and marketing, but for providing cross-platform solutions and management for evolving entertainment industry trade media and event businesses.

Byron Allen – Byron Allen is the founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of the global mediaand technology company Entertainment Studios. He owns eight television networks, including The Weather Channel, which was acquired in March 2018. The company also produces, distributes, and sells advertising for 41 television programs, making it one of the largest independent producers/distributors of first-run syndicated television programming for broadcast television stations. Robert Greenblatt – One of the most influential television executives of the decade, Robert Greenblatt was most recently the Chairman of NBC Entertainment.  Since coming onboard in 2011, Greenblatt returned the then-failing network to #1 in the 18-49 demo where it remained for five consecutive seasons.  In his final seasonas chairman, Greenblatt led the network to a total viewer win for the first time in more than a decade. A Golden Globe and Tony Award-winning producer,Greenblatt also ran Showtime and was a top executive at Fox, shepherding ground-breaking content that has changed the television landscape. The pair are set to keynote with a moderated conversation at NATPE Miami Marketplace& Conference 2019 on Wednesday morning, January 23rd. NATPE Miami will run from January 22st to January 24. Additionally, a first-time special event headlined by media mogul Tyler Perry and produced by NATPE entitled “Living theDream: A Career in Content” will take place on the Monday prior to the conference opening its doors.

NATPE also announced today the addition of three new members to their board – Susanne Daniels,Global Head of Original Content at YouTube, Kathleen Finch, Chief Lifestyle Brands Officer at Discovery Inc., and Brett Hansen, Headof Alternative Television at UTA. Heading into the yearly tent-pole event in Miami, the new board members join an impressive group of domestic and international content executives prepared to guide the conference conversation that will have an emphasis on connectivity and active deal-making.

Returning to the Fontainebleau Hotel, this year’s conference will be consolidated into the same building as the conference floor, meeting rooms and exhibition suites. “Living the Dream: A Career in Content” Featuring Esai Morales, Gloria Calderon Kellett, Benjamin Lobato and more in Miami on January 21, 2019

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 9, 2018)NATPE, the National Association of Television Program Executives, will present the first ever “Living the Dream: A Career in Content” event in partnership with the NAACP, (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and the NHFA (National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts). The event will be held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 21, 2019, one day before NATPE Miami 2019 commences, at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach Florida.

The special event is designed to assist students, young professionals and others with a desire to enter the entertainment and media industries to learn more about how their dreams can become a reality. Both the NHFA and the NAACP are committed to raising awareness of diversity and inclusion in front and behind the camera as well as in all creative content with the overall mission to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination. The organizations both have programs to inspire today’s youth and are committed to furthering awareness of multi-cultural content, diversity in media, and inspiring youth to follow their dreams.

World-renowned producer, director, actor and screenwriter Tyler Perry, will deliver the Keynote Address. Mr. Perry is an outstanding example of an individual who began his career with very little and through extraordinary talent and dedication has risen to the top of the industry in all areas of his multi-talented skills. Mr. Perry’s remarks will be followed by a panel headlined by CSI: Los Angeles’ Esai Morales, showrunner for USA’s “Queen of the South”, Benjamin Lobato and Netflix’ “One Day at a Time” showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett, as well as other leading talent, executives, producers and writers who have imbedded storylines of diversity in their works. The final portion of the day’s presentations will be followed by a “Celebration of Creativity”, in which three pre-selected students will present story ideas dealing with diversity live onstage to a panel of industry-leading development executives. The three budding young filmmakers will be selected from the NAACP’s Hollywood Bureau film education program, which searches the country for talented young people in a variety of disciplines, and the NHFA’s whose PitchDC and PitchNY programs showcase authentic and original content ideas from NHFA student scholars, alumni and associates.

CEETV and NATPE announce winner of third edition of PITCH & PLAY LIVE! #PitchPlay

Los Angeles/Budapest, 27 June – CEETV and NATPE have today announced  the winning format of the third edition of PITCH & PLAY LIVE!, which took place this evening during NATPE BUDAPEST INTERNATIONAL, as:  IN THE DARK (LNK, Lithuania) – in which seven sighted people are selected to tackle an extreme challenge – to survive ten weeks in complete darkness.

The winning format was chosen from three finalists, which also included THE COMMUNITY (Pink, Serbia) – a format in which contestants deal with real issues and everyday situations; and TWINS (Pyatnitsa, Russia) – where each episode tells the story of one pair of twins who decide to change their look and become different.

IN THE DARK was announced as the winner after the three finalist formats were presented live by their creators in Budapest during the PITCH & PLAY LIVE! session on Wednesday, 27 June. The jury, consisting of Manuela Caputi, Head of International Sales, Mediaset; Marietta Temesvari, Development and Content Strategist, Sony Pictures Television, CE and Kateryna Vyshnevska, Head of Development & Co-production, FILM.UA, then deliberated and selected the top format. 

This year, PITCH & PLAY LIVE’s three finalists were selected from among 14 formats from Lithuania, Serbia, Hungary, Russia and Turkey, following the vote of a selection committee which included Damien Porte, VP International Sales, Vivendi Entertainment; Nelly Feld, Head of Sales, Acquisitions and International Relations, Reshet TV; Andrew Sime, VP of Formats, Banijay Rights; Dann Novak, Content Executive, NATPE and Georgi R. Chakarov, President and CEO of TVBIZZ and CEETV.

Each format was evaluated based on three criteria: originality (how original is the idea for the format); universality (does the format idea show flexibility for changes and development) and internationality (does the format have the potential to be sold internationally). The selection committee members reviewed each of the 14 formats and voted in all three criteria with scores from 1 to 5. The final ranking was determined from the accumulated sum of all scores of the five selection committee members.

Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation closes deal with Viasat World for docudrama Scars of Nanking

Budapest, Hungary: 26 June 2018: Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation (JSBC) has today signed a deal with Viasat World at NATPE BUDAPEST. The international media company has secured the rights to broadcast the Emmy Award-winning docudrama Scars of Nanking on Viasat History in July 2018.

Seniha Tunaboylu, Head Of Content And Acquisitions, Viasat World, and Li Hanchun, Deputy Director of International Department, JSBC signed the deal today, with Li Sheng, Vice President of Jiangu Broadcasting Corporation and CEO of NATPE, JP Bommel also in attendance the event and witnessing the signing of the deal.

On securing the rights to air the docudrama on Viasat History across CEE, Tunaboylu comments: “Our Viasat History audience is very loyal and discerning, and we are committed to bringing them more of the world-class, acclaimed content that they crave. With this deal, our important partnership with JSBC continues to deepen. Scars of Nanking is a fantastic addition to our programme line up for July, and we can’t wait to see how it performs on the channel.”

Li Sheng comments: “The Nanking Massacre is a very important historical event during World War II. I believe the screening of Scars of Nanking on Viasat History will let more European audiences know about the forgotten holocaust. It is also a great pleasure for JSBC and Viasat World to partner, bringing world-class content to a bigger audience.”

Scars of Nanking won the nominations of Outstanding Cinematography and Outstanding Single Camera Editing in 45th Daytime Emmy, and finally received the award for Outstanding Cinematography.

In Scars of Nanking, American missionaries struggle to save Chinese civilians from slaughter and rape at the hands of Japanese invaders and to smuggle out evidence of the infamous Nanking Massacre of 1937. During the brutal invasion of China in 1937 by Imperial Japanese forces, tens of thousands of civilians and prisoners of war were murdered and women raped in the city that was then the Chinese capital. Today it is known simply as “The Rape of Nanking.” Many fled before the invasion. But 22 foreigners did not leave Nanking.

This is the story of some of those who chose to stay in the face of grave personal danger—American missionaries, some of them educators, others doctors or ministers, all determined to do what they could to help safeguard a quarter of a million Chinese civilians. Not only do they put themselves directly in harm’s way to protect women from rape and both men and women from random execution and murder—these Americans play a key role in bringing evidence of the Nanking Massacre to the rest of the world.

One missionary, Father John Magee, films the aftermath of atrocities, while another, George Fitch, risks everything to clandestinely spirit the films out of the city. Dr. Robert Wilson saves countless lives as the only remaining surgeon in Nanking, and a heroic teacher, Minnie Vautrin, prevents hundreds of rapes singlehandedly. Their stories come to life through the letters and diaries they actually wrote during that terrible time as they bear witness to one of the worst wartime atrocities in history.

CEETV and NATPE announce finalists for the third edition of PITCH & PLAY LIVE! #PitchPlay

Los Angeles/Budapest, 21 June –  CEETV and NATPE are proud to announce the three finalists for the third edition of PITCH & PLAY LIVE! which will take place during the NATPE BUDAPEST INTERNATIONAL market and conference between 25-28 June 2018.

Following a very close pre-selection vote, the three finalists this year are: THE COMMUNITY (Pink, Serbia) – a format in which contestants deal with real issues and everyday situations; IN THE DARK (LNK, Lithuania) – in which seven sighted people are selected to tackle an extreme challenge – to survive ten weeks in complete darkness; and TWINS (Pyatnitsa, Russia) – where each episode tells the story of one pair of twins who decide to change their look and become different.

The three finalist formats will be presented live by their creators in Budapest during the PITCH & PLAY LIVE! session on Wednesday, 27 June. The jury, consisting of Manuella Caputi, Head of International Sales, Mediaset; Marietta Temesvari, Development and Content Strategist, Sony Pictures Television and Kateryna Vyshnevska, Head of Development & Co-production, FILM.UA will review the top finalists and vote for one winner of the competition which will be announced in front of NATPE Budapest International attendees.

This year PITCH & PLAY LIVE’s Top 3 formats were selected from among 14 formats from Lithuania, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine, Russia and Turkey, following the vote of the selection committee which included Damien Porte, VP International Sales, Vivendi Entertainment; Nelly Feld, Head of Sales, Acquisitions and International Relations, Reshet TV; Andrew Sime, VP of Formats, Banijay Rights; Dann Novak, Content Executive, NATPE and Georgi R. Chakarov, President and CEO of TVBIZZ and CEETV.

Each format was evaluated based on three criteria: originality (how original is the idea for the format); universality (does the format idea show flexibility for changes and development) and internationality (does the format have the potential to be sold internationally). The selection committee members reviewed each of the 14 formats and voted in all three criteria with scores from 1 to 5. The final ranking was determined from the accumulated sum of all scores of the five selection committee members.

Launches Third Annual Pitch & Play Live! Extending the Competition to EMEA Producers

Los Angeles/Budapest, 8 March – NATPE Budapest is re-naming as NATPE BUDAPEST INTERNATIONAL in order to reflect the Global TV Market and Conference’s extended focus beyond CEE to the EMEA and worldwide content business.

NATPE BUDAPEST INTERNATIONAL will include a robust content marketplace, top-level studio screenings and business-focused conference sessions, and will take place at the InterContinental Hotel from 25 – 28 June 2018.

Reflective of the change, it’s annual PITCH & PLAY LIVE! event, co-hosted with CEETV the leading media platform for regional TV intelligence, will extend its entry criteria to include innovative independent producers* from the wider EMEA region.  

The goal of PITCH & PLAY LIVE!, now in its third year, is to showcase and recognize original format ideas with international potential. Any non-scripted format created after June 1, 2017 can be submitted for consideration in the competition. From all entries, up to ten titles will be selected and reviewed by an international committee of global content industry professionals, who will select three finalists. The top three formats will be presented at a dedicated session by their creators in front of a jury of highly respected TV professionals during NATPE BUDAPEST INTERNATIONAL.  After deliberation by the jury one format will be named the winner of PITCH & PLAY LIVE!

CEE and EMEA producers who wish to take part in the showcase will be offered a special discounted registration fee of €100 ($125) to the NATPE BUDAPEST INTERNATIONAL event in its entirety, providing complete access to the entire marketplace and conference. Participation/registration fees will be facilitated by NATPE (see links below for more information). 
In addition to media exposure, the winning format owner will receive complementary registration and accommodation for NATPE MIAMI 2019, as well as a series of development meetings with leading distributors in attendance.

Submissions must include a one-page description of the format in English, a trailer of three minutes or less and at least one full episode, both with English subtitles. The deadline for submissions is 1 May 2018.
*To qualify for registration as a “producer” at NATPE BUDAPEST INTERNATIONAL, you must be a creator/producer with original content that has only been distributed/broadcast in a single regional market. The conference will vet all producer registrations for approval; entities that are distributors or exhibitors are not eligible for the producer’s registration rate.

LOS ANGELES, January 4, 2018 – The host of the 4th Annual Unscripted Breakthrough Awards at this year’s NATPE MIAMI Marketplace and Conference will be Dan Abrams, chief legal analyst for ABC News and host of Big Fish Entertainment’s hit series Live PD on A&E. The announcement was made by the organization’s President and CEO, JP Bommel. Additional programming for the conference, which will take place from January 16-18, 2018 at the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc Miami Beach Resorts, was also revealed including a headlining conversation between Lionsgate Television Group Chairman Kevin Beggs and Facebook Head of Market Development Matt Jacobson.

The NATPE Unscripted Breakthrough Awards are designed to honor programs and celebrate people that broke through the clutter in the preceding year, as well as becoming part of the cultural conversation and generally altering the expectations of what constitutes a reality program. Hosted by Dan Abrams (A&E’s Live PD), the winners will be announced at a special luncheon ceremony on Tuesday, January 16th during the NATPE MIAMI conference. 

Leading the programming highlights made public today will be a conversation between Lionsgate’s Kevin Beggs and Facebook’s Matt Jacobson on How A Listening Culture Can Help Businesses Drive Results and Recruit Talent.

Another brand-new concept for NATPE Miami will be the Open Development Session, co-curated by Dan Goodman of Believe Entertainment Group. Three projects will be presented on stage by their creators with a short talk and screening followed by a live discussion by a team of experts representing all sides of the development process. The panel of experts to convene include Mina Lefevre, Head of Development, Facebook; Caitlin McGinty, SVP, Head of Programing and Development, The Story Lab, Dentsu Aegis; Jeff Grossman, SVP, Digital Content, CBS Interactive; and Ivana Kirkbride, Chief Content Officer, Verizon go90.

The upcoming NATPE MIAMI Marketplace and Conference takes place from January 16-18, 2018 at the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc Miami Beach Resorts.

Joining the programming lineup for the first time this year will be the NATPE Streaming Summit, which will take a holistic look at the current OTT and streaming landscape and its outlook for the future. Facebook’s Head of Global and Creative Strategy, Ricky Van Veen, will be lending his voice to the OTT conversation during NATPE Miami at a session breaking down what is in store for Facebook Watch, their new content platform. The programming throughout the Platforms & OTT track will mirror the mission laid out by the recently formed NATPE NXTGN Advisory Board to help the industry navigate emerging media.

NATPE Adds Netflix VP Original Content Cindy Holland, Facebook Head of Development Mina Lefevre, Universal Television President Pearlena Igbokwe and CBS SVP Alternative Programming Sharon Vuong to Its Board

Organization Dedicated to Helping the Industry Navigate Content Also Forms NXTGN Advisory Board, Made up of Top Executives Focused on Emerging Media and New Business Models

LOS ANGELES, October 26, 2017 – The National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) today announced the election of Netflix Vice President, Original Content Cindy Holland, Universal Television President, Pearlena Igbokwe, Facebook Head of Development Mina Lefevre, and CBS Senior Vice President, Alternative Programming, Sharon Vuong to its Board, effective immediately. This was jointly announced today by Andy Kaplan, NATPE Chairman of the Board and JP Bommel, President and CEO of NATPE. The new appointees will serve a term of two years.

Representing broadcast and digital streaming services of the business, these new Board members round out an already robust group of content industry executives to position NATPE for continued evolution. With four new members representing broadcast/networks and OTT/platforms, these categories are now the second largest groups of representation on the Board.

Cindy Holland is the VP for Original Content at Netflix where she is responsible for acquiring and launching original series for the over 109 million users. Pearlena Igbokwe was named President, Universal Television in June 2016 and oversees creative programming for one of the country’s largest and most successful production companies. Mina Lefevre is currently Head of Development & Programming for Facebook’s original content initiative. She oversees the development and production of scripted and unscripted shows for Watch on Facebook. Sharon Vuong is the Senior Vice President of Alternative Programming at CBS Entertainment. Vuong oversees development of new alternative programs, including reality series, game shows and other non-scripted programming.

It will focus on the emergence of new platforms and business models in TV, OTT, digital, mobile, gaming, AR, VR and AI. “Our goal at NATPE is to be at the forefront of our constantly evolving business, lead content ecosystem dialogue, and create marketplace evolution that breeds new business opportunities. NATPE 2018 Set for January 16-18 Under The Theme “A Changing Industry In A Changing World”

LOS ANGELES, September 7 – The recipients of NATPE’s 15th Annual Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award are prolific executive producer Greg Berlanti (Arrow, Flash), Telemundo and NBCUniversal International chairman Cesar Conde, award-winning actress Jane Fonda (Grace and Frankie), TBS and TNT president Kevin Reilly and award-winning actor Tom Selleck (Blue Bloods). They will receive the prestigious award at a special reception on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach. The Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award is presented each year during the annual NATPE Miami Market and Conference, which will next take place under the new theme “A Changing Industry in a Changing World” from January 16 to 18, 2018, at the Fontainebleau & Eden Roc hotels in Miami Beach, Florida.

At NATPE, top creatives and executives from across production, advertising, distribution, music and more gather for three full days of high-level deal-making, networking, parties and meetups. The 2018 Tartikoff Legacy Award recipients are recognized for exhibiting their extraordinary passion, leadership, independence and vision through their diverse work in being a part of the creation and distribution of content for the world’s traditional and digital marketplaces. Named in honor of Brandon Tartikoff, one of the most esteemed programmers in the history of television, the Award was created to acknowledge a select group of television professionals who have demonstrated the highest degree of excellence in their field.

Greg Berlanti is a WGA, DGA and Golden Globe-nominated writer, director and producer credited with being the force behind some of the most inventive and acclaimed works on television. He currently serves as executive producer and writer of Riverdale, based on the beloved Archie comics, and executive producer and co-creator of The CW’s Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, collectively known as The CW’s Arrowverse.  He also serves as an executive producer on Blindspot starring Jaimie Alexander. Upcoming television projects via his Berlanti Productions banner include Lifetime’s straight-to-series thriller You, The CW’s Black Lightning, the live-action version of DC Entertainment’s Titans, and ABC’s new series Deception. Previous to these roles, he served as the writer, director and producer behind several of the most creative and lauded television series, including Brothers & Sisters, Eli Stone (for which he was nominated for a WGA award), Dirty, Sexy, Money, the mini-¬series Political Animals (for which he was nominated for a WGA, DGA and Golden Globe award), The Tomorrow People and The Mysteries of Laura. Berlanti started in television as a writer and executive producer on Dawson’s Creek before creating and executive producing two of the WB’s most critically acclaimed dramas: Everwood and Jack & Bobby. Outside of TV, Berlanti made his film directorial debut in 2000 with The Broken Hearts Club. Cesar Conde is Chairman of NBCUniversal International Group and NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises and serves on the Executive Committee of NBCUniversal. As Chairman, Conde is responsible for the operations and international expansion of NBCUniversal businesses outside of North America. Conde also oversees NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, a premier and fast-growing portfolio of media properties serving Hispanics in the U.S. Under Conde’s leadership, Telemundo hit a historic milestone in 2016, by ranking as the #1 Spanish-language network. She revolutionized the fitness industry with the release of Jane Fonda’s Workout (1982) – still the top grossing home video of all time – and went on to create 23 home exercise videos, 13 audio recordings, and seven bestselling books, which have sold 17 million copies all together. She secured starring roles in dozens of highly acclaimed productions, in addition to taking on responsibilities as a film and television producer, with credits include Coming Home, The China Syndrome, Nine to Five, Rollover, On Golden Pond, The Morning After and The Dollmaker. Kevin Reilly is the President of TNT and TBS and the Chief Creative Officer for Turner Entertainment, overseeing industry-leading properties including TBS, TNT and Super Deluxe. Before joining Turner, he served as head of entertainment for FOX (2007-2014), president of entertainment at NBC (2004-2007) and president of entertainment at FX (2000-2003). Widely cited as an industry innovator, Reilly was among the first television executives to make meaningful investments in digital and social media content and push for multiplatform ratings measurement, and has championed some of the most culturally-influential programs in television history, including Empire, The Office, 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, The Sopranos, The Shield, Nip/Tuck, ER, Law & Order and Glee. Since joining Turner in November 2014, Reilly has aggressively led major brand evolutions for TBS and TNT by creating distinctive, original comedies and late-night shows – such as Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, The Guest Book and Search Party – with TNT rolling out premium, buzz-worthy dramas such as Animal Kingdom, Claws and Good Behavior. He currently stars in the CBS hit series Blue Bloods, which will debut its eighth season this fall. NATPE Budapest Introduces New Business Initiatives In 2017

NBCUniversal, MGM, Twentieth Century Fox, Lionsgate, CBS and Warner Bros. Offer Screenings

Los Angeles, 16 May –  JP Bommel, President & CEO of NATPE announced today the launch of several new initiatives for the forthcoming NATPE Budapest Global TV Market and Conference, taking place at the Intercontinental Hotel in Budapest from June 19-22.  

In addition to the robust conference program featuring “Success in Co-Productions: Maximizing Your Regional and International Business Partnerships” and “A World of Formats: Insights and Strategies for Global Distribution”, the premier global content and membership organization will introduce an expanded networking service, targeted buyers’ sessions and a regional producers’ summit all designed to foster new business and stimulate creative discussions and partnerships. NBCUniversal, MGM, Twentieth Century Fox TV Distribution, Lionsgate, CBS and Warner Bros. will offer CEE acquisition executives new content, fresh from the LA Screenings; and the popular Pitch and Play is back for a second edition.

150 companies from broadcasters, cable, satellite and pay-tv services, and digital networks across 70 countries are set to attend, and buyers’ participation is already outpacing last year, with more than 415 confirmed to-date. To facilitate buyer and seller introductions, NATPE is launching MyNATPE – the  organization’s proprietary, intuitive match-making networking platform.

Also set to debut at the conference are key “Business Intelligence”’ sessions – “Opening the Window on CEE” and “CEE Market Overview: Regional Breakout Hits, Trends and Data” – outlining CEE buyers’ programming needs and unveiling current trends from across the region.  These invaluable presentations will take place on Monday June 19, ahead of the opening of the market floor which takes place June 20.

OPENING THE WINDOW ON CEE
This panel will consider the process of windowing content around the world which has become increasingly complex, with new platforms and opportunities springing up continuously. What do producers and distributors need to know about buyers’ expectations, and what do buyers need to know about the distributors’ approach to selling across the various existing and new windows?  A panel of experts will discuss how the business process is evolving in the CEE region; what’s new, the key battles over rights and where success has been found.   

CEE MARKET OVERVIEW
This multi-level, interactive session will provide a comprehensive look at CEE television and content, and support regional and global business acumen. Commencing with a comprehensive review exploring the latest trends in the region, including a look at the hits of the season, the presentation will be followed by a moderated discussion among regional experts and attendees.

REGIONAL PRODUCERS’ SUMMIT
This summit, curated to engage emerging producers within the CEE region, will also take place at Budapest’s Intercontinental Hotel on 20 June.  The event will open with a “state of the union” keynote delivered by a leading and respected senior executive.  This will be followed by a panel of experts leading a discussion and audience Q&A which will focus on the challenges and opportunities for production success in the region.  A pitch feedback session will then take place, where, selected via a submission process, four project reels from local production companies will be screened. Each project, one from four distinct formats, and its creator will then receive constructive comments and questions from our expert panel and their fellow participants.  The event will conclude with an informal discussion.

PITCH & PLAY LIVE
Following the success of the inaugural edition in 2016, CEETV and NATPE will host the second edition of their format initiative PITCH & PLAY LIVE, aimed at showcasing original format ideas with international potential from the CEE region. Any non-scripted format ideas created after June 1, 2016 can take part in the competition. The deadline for submissions has been extended until May 20. Up to ten titles will be selected and reviewed by an international committee of TV industry professionals who will pick three finalists. These top three formats will be presented live by their creators in a special session on June 21, as a key event of NATPE Budapest 2017, followed by a celebratory party. A jury of highly respected TV professionals will vote for one format winner of PITCH & PLAY LIVE which will be announced at NATPE Budapest.

JP Bommel Named President & CEO of NATPE

Top Priorities Include Expansion of Membership and Creation of Year-Round Events

LOS ANGELES, February 28, 2017 – JP Bommel has been named NATPE’s President and CEO, effective today, according to Andy Kaplan, NATPE Chairman. Mr. Bommel previously held the position of Managing Director and COO at the association, a pioneer in the television and content industry.

“NATPE Miami 2017, the first with JP at the helm, was a huge success with compelling new tracks and record numbers of international attendees. JP has a strong track record and I’m excited to continue working with him on our shared vision for NATPE, building on its substantial reach and relevance as the industry continues to evolve around the world and across platforms,” said Andy Kaplan, Chairman of NATPE and President, Worldwide Networks at Sony Pictures Television.

The announcement comes on the heels of a successful NATPE Miami 2017 in January, which was the first under the direction of Mr. Bommel.  Among the highlights from the conference were the addition of three new programming tracks: NATPE Music, NATPE Scripted, and the NATPE Station Group Summit.

Looking toward the future, Mr. Bommel will focus his priorities on the establishment of new membership tiers, the creation of new 365-day-a-year experiences for members, and the expansion of its 2017 NATPE Budapest Market and Content Summit (June 19-22). 

Mr. Bommel has served as the managing director and chief operating officer of NATPE since August 2015. Prior to joining NATPE, he founded Barton Creek Intl., which developed global events and created strategic partnerships; served as vice president, business development, entertainment for Reed Midem from 2005-2013, where he was responsible for significant sales activity and new business development for entertainment conferences such as MIPTV/MIPCOM and MIDEM (Music); and served as vice president, global marketing for EMI/Capitol, Sony Music, and BMG. Mr. Bommel received his education in Paris and holds both U.S. and EU citizenship.

Broadcasting Industry Legend and NATPE Founding Member Lew Klein to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

NATPE to Begin Student Membership Tier as New Initiative of the NATPE Educational Foundation

Los Angeles, CA – January 12, 2017 – A legend of the television industry, Lew Klein, NATPE Foundation President will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by NATPE the organization he helped create over 50 years ago. The award will be presented to Mr. Klein during the annual NATPE Miami Conference and Marketplace, which takes place Jan. 17-19, 2017 at both the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc Miami Beach resorts. 

NATPE, the leading global marketplace and resource of television and platform executives also disclosed the launch of NATPE Student Membership. 

“Lew Klein is a legend in broadcasting who had the vision, compassion and relationships to found both NATPE and The NATPE Educational Foundation. It is an honor for me to present the Lifetime Achievement Award this year to Lew, who paved the way for so many in our business,” said Andy Kaplan, NATPE Chairman and President, Worldwide Networks, Sony Pictures Television. 

The world of broadcast television would be a different place without Lew Klein, who started his career in the 1950’s in the programming department of WFIL (now WPVI) in Philadelphia. From 1984 to 1993, Klein served as president of Gateway Communications Inc., which owned four CBS affiliate stations in New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. He was the executive producer of the popular dance show “American Bandstand” and of the award-winning series “Frontiers of Knowledge and College News Conference.” Following his passion for teaching a new generation about the industry, Mr. Klein has held the position of Adjunct Professor at the School of Communications at Temple University in Philadelphia for 64 years. The new Student Membership tier will provide college students nationwide access to NATPE’s resources for young professionals looking to establish a career in the broadcast and content industries. It will operate through the organization’s Educational Foundation. The NATPE Educational Foundation was founded by Mr. Klein to promote the educational activities on behalf of NATPE, including its successful internship program which provides an extension of the classroom for students. Mr. Klein currently serves as the Foundation’s President. The interns who volunteer at NATPE this year will be given a one year membership to the new tier. More details on the year-round benefits of NATPE’s Student Membership will be revealed in the coming months.

LOS ANGELES, December 8, 2016 – NATPE Miami 2017 is pacing well ahead of last year’s market and conference with a strong representation of international attendees according to JP Bommel, COO and Managing Director, NATPE. Also announced today were a new membership tier, NATPE Next Gen, and the host of the Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Awards, Natalie Morales. The leading global marketplace and resource of television and platform executives will run from Jan. 17-19 at both the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc Miami Beach resorts.

14th Annual Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award Honorees Announced

LOS ANGELES, November 11, 2016 – NATPE’s 14th Annual Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award recipients are Susanne Daniels, Randy Falco, Eva Longoria, Josh Sapan, Dana Walden and Gary Newman. They will receive the prestigious award at a special reception on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach.

“Each of this year’s inspiring honorees shares Brandon Tartikoff’s passion and vision for excellence in television. Dana, Gary, Susanne, Randy, Eva and Josh have each earned the respect of the industry and rightly deserve to have their achievements celebrated in Miami,” said Andy Kaplan, Chairman of the Board, NATPE.

The 2017 Tartikoff Legacy Award recipients are recognized for exhibiting their extraordinary passion, leadership, independence and vision through the process of creating compelling content. Named in honor of Brandon Tartikoff, one of the most esteemed programmers in the history of television, the Award was created to acknowledge a select group of television professionals who have demonstrated a high degree of excellence in their field.  The Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award is presented each year during the annual NATPE Miami Market and Conference, which will next take place from January 17 to 19, 2017 at the Fontainebleau & Eden Roc in Miami Beach, Florida.

“Susanne, Eva, Randy, Josh, Dana and Gary embody the creative brilliance and passion for the entertainment industry that Brandon held so sacred. It would have meant so much to Brandon that NATPE has insisted on keeping his memory and vision alive,” said Lilly Tartikoff. “It is my honor to congratulate these five beyond amazing recipients of the Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award.” 

Dana Walden and Gary Newman are the Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group, overseeing a consortium of media and content creation companies which includes the broadcast network Fox Broadcasting Company (FBC); the broadcast and cable production studios 20th Century Fox Television (TCFTV) and Fox 21 Television Studios; the licensing division, Fox Consumer Products; and syndication supplier of off-network programming, Twentieth Television. Their recent projects include “Empire,”  “This is Us,” “Speechless,” “The Last Man on Earth,” “Grease: Live” as well as “The X-Files.” Their upcoming projects include “Star” from Lee Daniels and a new take on the classic “24” franchise, “24: Legacy.” 

Susanne Daniels is the global head of original content for YouTube where she oversees original programming that provides subscribers with access to exclusive content through YouTube Red, featuring stars that became famous on the media platform. Current programming includes “Scare PewDiePie,” “Dance Camp,” “A Trip to Unicorn Island,” “Lazer Team” and an upcoming Lionsgate-produced series based on the “Step Up” franchise. Prior to joining YouTube, Daniels held the position of president of programming at MTV, the WB and Lifetime.

Randy Falco is president and CEO of Univision Communications Inc., overseeing a media portfolio that reaches an estimated 89 million average monthly unduplicated monthly media consumers, and includes 17 broadcast, cable and digital networks and partnerships; 126 local television and radio stations; an array of online and mobile apps and products and content creation facilities across the United States. Falco has received numerous recognitions including 10 Emmy awards for Olympics coverage, a Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame induction and a recipient of the Frank Stanton Award, the Ballet Hispanico Gala Honor, Museum of Moving Image Honor, the MALDEF Legacy Leader Award, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Board of Trustees’ Award, and the Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) Champion Award, among many others. 

Josh Sapan is the president and CEO for AMC Networks Inc., overseeing television networks AMC, IFC, SundanceTV, WE tv, and BBC AMERICA (operated through a joint venture with BBC Worldwide); feature film labels IFC Films and Sundance Selects; and AMC Networks International, the company’s international programming and distribution division. Lionsgate’s Kevin Beggs and Facebook’s Matt Jacobson, as well as the President/Chairman of ASCAP, iconic composer Paul Williams have been tapped to deliver Keynote addresses for the new tracks. NATPE Miami will return January, 17-19 to the Fontainebleau Miami Beach and neighboring Eden Roc Resort.

Exploring the vital longstanding link between TV and music, NATPE Music will assemble A-List musicians, songwriters, publishers, producers, supervisors and executives at the forefront of the music industry to provide actionable, and invaluable insights into the places where television and music meet. This track will be headlined by Grammy-Golden Globe- and Academy Award-winning songwriter and composer, keynote Paul Williams.

NATPE Scripted will bring drama into focus – the new set of sessions will gather top-tier creators and executives from around the world to examine    what goes into the creation of engaging stories. A keynote session with Kevin Beggs, Chairman, Lionsgate Television Group, in conversation with Matt Jacobson, Head of Market Development, Facebook, will be the centerpiece of the new track.

To round out the set of newest programming tracks, the NATPE Station Group Summit will recognize the industry’s trendsetting executives who have led the transition of NATPE into a dynamic, multiplatform industry association. NATPE CEETV and TVBIZZ Announce Inaugural “Pitch & Play Live!” Finalists

Winner to be Revealed 29 June During NATPE Budapest 2016 Market & Content Summit

LOS ANGELES/BUDAPEST, June 22, 2016 – NATPE announced today the three (3) finalists for the inaugural “Pitch & Play LIVE” competition, a new initiative presented by NATPE in partnership with CEETV and TVBIZZ, which will showcase original non-scripted format ideas possessing international potential from across the CEE region. The winner will be revealed at the forthcoming “Pitch & Play LIVE” event 29 June from noon–1:30 pm. The session is part of NATPE Budapest 2016 Market & Content Summit in Budapest, 27-30 June.

The finalists will present their formats to the following international panel of judges: Amos Neumann, Chief Operating Officer of Armoza Formats; Can Okan, CEO/President of ITV Inter Medyaand Girts Licis, Head of CEE, Formats & Content Development, Modern Times Group.

The three finalists are:

  • “Best Offer” (Osakond, Estonia) – a show where celebrities offer unique personal items in a real-time online auction with the proceeds going to charity.
  • “Crack Them Up. Kids” (Kvartal-95, Ukraine) – an entertaining comedy gameshow where young participants win a prize if they can successfully get two acclaimed and popular comedians to laugh at their skit.
  • “Pick the Right Box” (Kvartal-95, Gaudi Studio, Ukraine) – a show where ordinary, yet unique, people compete with celebrities in four categories: science, sports, singing and dancing.

Each format was evaluated by members of an esteemed blue-ribbon jury, which includes: Pascal Dalton, Regional Sales Director, Formats: CEE at Endemol Shine Group; Nick Smith, SVP International Format Production at All3Media International; Noelia Nicolas, Director European Formats at CBS Studios International; Jordan Ryder, VP of Domestic & International Programming, NATPE; and George R. Chakarov, CEO at CEETV, TVBIZZ Group.

NATPE Budapest 2016 Market & Content Summit Reports An Increase in Buyer Numbers to 400+

Announces Session Programming

LOS ANGELES, May 11, 2016 – NATPE announced today that the success of several new initiatives has helped the forthcoming Budapest 2016 Market & Content Summit achieve a substantial rise in the number of pre-registrations by acquisitions executives. More than 400 key buyers from 217 companies and 49 territories, including buyers from all the major TV stations within 25 CEE countries, have already registered to attend. Additionally, NATPE will host an extended lineup of conference sessions presented by both leading international and locally-based content executives, all of which will take place at the InterContinental Budapest 27 – 30 June. 

NATPE Budapest will feature dedicated screenings to showcase new programming from major studios including CBS, Lionsgate, NBC and Warner Bros., as well as a diverse range of local and international exhibitors. Companies new to exhibit at the 2016 Budapest event include Bonneville Distribution (USA), Comarex SA de CV (Mexico), EastWest License Ltd. (Hong Kong), HNFF World Sales (Hungary), Horizon Film (Turkey), Newen Distribution (France), One Connxt (Jordan) and Sonar Entertainment (USA), with Paramount returning to the event after a five year hiatus.

Along with an increased number of delegates from across the CEE region, the market will host participants from Latin America with Caracol Television, Comarex SA de CV, Telemundo and Televisa, as well as many exhibitors from across the Middle East, Europe and Asia. 

NATPE Budapest’s Content Summit will highlight both local and international, scripted and unscripted programming, kicking off on Monday 27 June with a CEE Content Showcase where Danny Kershaw, K7 Media’s International Research Manager, will shine the spotlight on the very best in Central and Eastern European original unscripted programming revealing the current tastes and cultural differences across content created in the region. 

This is followed by a unique masterclass, designed to provide detailed information about the steps required to reach global co-production success. In The Practicalities of Making a European Co-Production, a leading panel of experts will cover all aspects of scripted co-production from how to best design an effective pitch right through to choosing the proper distribution platform. Issues specific to the CEE will be discussed, including financing plans, and union relations and understanding global co-production treaties.

Launching the programme on Tuesday 28 June NATPE Budapest will present a fireside keynote chat with Mr. Peter Kolosi, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of RTL Hungary at RTL Group SA who will discuss the opportunities and challenges of local scripted content in the CEE. Mr. Kolosi is responsible for the programming of RTL Hungary’s family of channels, including the market-leading flagship channel RTL Klub and the seven cable channels for Hungarian-speaking audiences. 

Mid-day, participants will reconvene during lunch for a Case Study session spotlighting HBO’s “Aranyélet.” A critically-acclaimed, eight-hour drama series produced by HBO Europe, “Aranyélet” (“Golden Life”) is based on the Finnish format “Helppo elämä” (“Easy Living”), with the story and characters adapted for Hungarian audiences by local writers. The case study will look at what drew HBO to the project, the necessary considerations for adaptation and how HBO Europe approached its production. These and other matters will be examined by Antony Root, EVP, Original Programming and Production, HBO Europe, and Gabor Krigler, HBO Hungary’s Creative Executive who developed and oversaw the show creatively and HBO Europe Production Executive Anna Zavorszky. They will be joined for this special lunch session by the series’ producer Judit Stalter from Laokoon Films, the production company behind SON OF SAUL, winner of the 2016 Oscar for Best Film in a Foreign Language, and other members of the production team. 

On Wednesday, 29 June formats are again put under the microscope during the breakfast session Global Formats: What’s Working, What’s Failing, What’s Next? The session panel boasts a world-class lineup of industry executives including Mike Beale, ITV EVP Global Development and Formats; Merrily Ross, VP Formats & Content Development, Modern Times Group; Amos Neumann, COO Armoza Formats and Pascal Dalton, Regional Sales Director, TV Formats and New Media, CEE Endemol Shine Group. The panel will analyze the past, present and future of the global non-scripted business. 

Of special interest to local producers within CEE is PITCH & PLAY LIVE, a session presented by NATPE in partnership with CEETV and TVBIZZ, which aims to showcase original non-scripted format ideas with international potential from across the region. Any non-scripted developed format created after June 1, 2015 in the CEE region may be submitted for consideration. Out of all entries, up to 10 titles will be selected and reviewed by a Finalist Selection Committee comprised of five TV industry professionals who will be charged with selecting three finalists. This committee includes George R. Chakarov, CEO at CEETV, TVBIZZ Group; Jordan Ryder, VP of Domestic & International Programming, NATPE; Pascal Dalton, Regional Sales Director, Formats: CEE at Endemol Shine Group; Nick Smith, SVP International Format Production at All3Media International; and Noelia Nicolas, Director European Formats at CBS Studios International. The top three finalist formats will then be identified and presented “live” by their creators during the session to a Blue Ribbon jury of three highly respected TV professionals including Can Okan, CEO & President, ITV Inter Medya; Amos Neumann, COO, Armoza Formats and Girts Licis, Head of CEE, Formats & Content Development, Modern Times Group. Collectively these three jurists will select and declare one format as the winner at the conclusion of the session.
