Variety Business Intelligence
Brett is the Director of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) research at Variety Business Intelligence (VBI), the entertainment industry’s leading metadata provider for filmed content.
Under Brett’s guidance, VBI’s coverage of JEDI data expanded to over 1.5 million people, as well as an industry-leading approach to the collection of respectful, accurate and unbiased demographic data. The dataset includes ethnicity, country of origin, gender, LGBTQ+, and age. It is the only DEI dataset to identify ethnicities in multiethnic individuals, country of heritage,
languages spoken, and personal pronouns, among other attributes. The investment made by VBI in the JEDI space is driven by the team’s commitment to supporting a more equitable entertainment and media industry. VBI customers, including the leading streamers, networks, studios and agencies, are using JEDI data to advance representation, drive diverse hiring, meet inclusion content requirements, and evaluate their progress both internally and against peers.
Brett received his doctorate from USC; and in 2016 was awarded a prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Brett is also an accomplished violist and has played on countless films, television series and recordings.
