Courtney A. Kemp is a highly regarded creator, showrunner, and producer in the television industry. Kemp is the mind behind Starz’ critically acclaimed gritty New York drama, “Power” which premiered its sixth and final season this summer. The series marks her debut as a creator and showrunner and follows the complex character James “Ghost” St. Patrick and his empire. Under Kemp’s fearless leadership, the show has reached phenomenal heights, and remains Starz’ most watched original series to date. It currently boasts an average weekly viewership of over 10 million, when considering multiplatform and delayed viewing, making it the second-most-watched series on premium cable only after HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”
Season-to-season, Kemp continually elevates the show’s presence in the television landscape as well as its viewership numbers. The series doubled viewership from its series premiere episode to its Season 1 finale, also generating the largest concentration of African American viewership of any scripted premium series in almost a decade. By the time the second season wrapped, “Power” drew a record 6.3 million viewers each week, up 389% from the first season. The Season 3 premiere episode alone raked in 2.26 million live viewers, establishing it as Starz’s best original series season debut and the most watched episode of any Starz original series of all time. In 2017, the season three premiere success led to an exclusive, multi-year deal with Lionsgate and Starz under her End of Episode production banner, what many would consider the biggest talent power play since Lionsgate’s acquisition of the premium cabler. Additionally, Starz announced the renewal of “Power” for season six prior to wrapping production on season five and has since announced the first of several planned spin-offs set within the “Power” cinematic universe. The first of these series, “Power Book II: Ghost” will feature global superstar Mary J. Blige and is set to debut next year.
Just this past October, Kemp signed a new lucrative multiyear development and production deal with Lionsgate, where she will develop and produce a variety of new content across multiple platforms and networks through End of Episode. With a continued mission to create and produce bold, provocative and high-stakes character driven programming, Kemp will also champion other forward thinking storytellers and their stories. The first project to come out of this powerful new deal is “Dirty Thirty,” a one-hour drama surrounding the real-life rogue and corrupt NYPD cops operating out of the 30th Precinct in the early 1990s, a series Kemp is developing for HBO. Shortly after unveiling her project with the premium cabler, Kemp and her shingle also optioned the rights to The Ones We Choose, the Simon & Schuster novel from Julie Clark that explores the struggle between the family you choose and the genetics you don’t. The project will be produced in association with Lionsgate Television.
Named by the Hollywood Reporter as one of the top 50 “Power Showrunners” four years in a row, Kemp’s profile continues to rise. Additionally, she was listed in Variety’s “Producers Impact Report” for being a staple in the industry by making an impact on the respective television season. Marie Claire Magazine named her one of “The 50 Most Influential Women in America,” she was included as one of the female powerhouses on Elle Magazine’s “The Agenda” and named one of Ebony Magazine’s “Power 100” honorees.
Previously, Kemp was a writer and supervising producer on the celebrated television show “The Good Wife,” which went on to garner nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series and a Writers Guild Award for Dramatic Series. She also worked on ABC’s “Eli Stone,” and Fox’s “Justice” and “The Bernie Mac Show,” among others. Prior to her work in television, Kemp wrote for many prestigious magazines, including GQ, Vibe, and Marie Claire.
