Friday Abernethy is Senior Vice President of Content Distribution for Univision Communications Inc., the leading Hispanic media company in the U.S. In this role, she leads strategic content distribution and licensing for the Company’s best-in-class multiplatform portfolio of news, entertainment and sports content featured across Univision, the number one Spanish-language network in the U.S., UniMás, the fastest-growing broadcast network, Galavisión, the country’s leading Spanish-language cable network, and TUDN, the number one Spanish-language sports network in the U.S. She also oversees distribution of Univision’s digital and streaming video offerings.
Since joining Univision in 2014, Abernethy has led a team of professionals to exceed the Company’s distribution and revenue goals through a stunning breadth of complex distribution agreements. These deals encompass major providers and platforms and represent a variety of content models including cable television, subscription video-on-demand and over-the-top streaming services.
With two-plus decades of experience, Abernethy has held several senior content distribution roles at major media companies. Prior to Univision, she served as the executive vice president of content distribution and partner marketing for Pop, where she was responsible for setting the network’s long-term distribution strategy and was instrumental in a major strategic repositioning of the business. Before Pop, Abernethy was the vice president of national accounts/field operations for the distribution function of Viacom/BET Networks. Earlier in her career, Abernethy held positions at GE Capital, the financial services division of General Electric, and JPMorgan Chase.
An admired and respected leader, Abernethy has been lauded with multiple awards throughout her career. Most recently, she was honored as a 2020 Multichannel News and Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) Wonder Woman. In 2018, she was inducted into the Cablefax Sales Hall of Fame and has been named to the publication’s Most Powerful Women list every year since 2016. A 2008 graduate of WICT’s Betsy Magness Leadership Institute, a prestigious executive development program, Abernethy has since served as its executive liaison and is an active mentor for other program participants.
Outside of work, Abernethy serves as the Chairperson of Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA, a non-profit dedicated to creating life-changing experiences for children, adults and families, and served as the Committee Chair in identifying the organization’s first female CEO in its 100-year history. A graduate of Denison University, Abernethy resides in New York City with her husband and their two children.
