Marcos Santana is the President of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises’ Telemundo Global Studios. In this role, Santana leads the division’s domestic and international scripted production units including Telemundo Studios, Telemundo International Studios and Telemundo International, as well as all of the division’s co-production partnerships. Under his direction, each entity produces its own unique brand of content geared to reach distinctive audiences.
Previously, Santana was President of Telemundo International and President of Telemundo International Studios. In that role, Santana was charged with overseeing all of Telemundo’s international distribution efforts, as well as the company’s distribution services to other producers around the world, international co-productions and partnerships. Santana has also been involved in the network’s development process for all program genres, including original concepts development, scripts procurement, casting decisions and international distribution viability assessment.
Santana is the founding president of Telemundo International Studios (TIS). Created in 2016, the production unit is focused on creating high-end short-form scripted formats to fulfill the growing needs of emerging platforms and international markets. With its high budget Spanish-language Premium Series, it is tapping an international growth opportunity at a time when Telemundo has placed itself in the lead among Spanish-language broadcast networks in primetime in the United States. TIS is focused on adapting to new consumption trends and featuring the work of some of the Hispanic entertainment industry’s most important onscreen and off-screen talent – including actors, producers and directors in the Hollywood market.
During Santana’s tenure as president of Telemundo Internacional from 2007 to 2017, the company handled the international distribution of Telemundo and Universo’s original content, and that of other top producers. Telemundo Internacional became the second largest worldwide distributor of Spanish-language programming in the world with programs airing in more than 120 countries and pay TV channels in almost 80 countries, within Latin America and Africa. Telemundo’s financial turnaround is in great part due to the company’s decision to produce original telenovelas, realities and series in the United States, a factor credited to Santana’s influence. In 2017, the international distribution operations for Telemundo and Universo were assumed by NBCUniversal International Distribution for all territories with the exception of Mexico, a region for which Telemundo Internacional maintains exclusive distribution rights.
Prior to NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, Santana previously served as president and chief operating officer of Tepuy International, a programming distribution company which he founded in 1989 and was later acquired at the end of 2006 by Telemundo to form Telemundo Internacional. He was installed as its president in early 2007 and is a current member of the Boards of Telemundo and TVN Panama.
Santana has been a longstanding and active member of the board of several important television networks in Latin America, including Televen in Venezuela and others in Panama and Spain. Santana is also a current member of the Board of the Miami Symphony Orchestra (MISO).
