|Bio||Randy Falco is President and Chief Executive Officer of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI), a top-tier multimedia company informing, entertaining and empowering the Hispanic community and a diverse American mainstream. Under his leadership, UCI has expanded to reach an estimated 83 million average monthly unduplicated media consumers across its media portfolio, which includes 17 broadcast, cable and digital networks and partnerships; 126 local television and radio stations; an array of online and mobile apps and products and content creation facilities across the U.S.
Falco, a Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame inductee, has received several recognitions throughout his career, including the Frank Stanton Award, the Ballet Hispanico Gala Honor, Museum of Moving Image Honor and the MALDEF Legacy Leader Award; he is a multiple Cablefax 100 “Above it All” honoree, in recognition of his record of innovation and leadership, and on multiple occasions has appeared in Adweek's Power List of the most reputable leaders in Marketing, Media and Technology. In 2015 Falco was honored by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) with the Board of Trustees’ Award, the Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) Champion Award, and the ArtsConnection Honor.
UCI is comprised of verticals focused on drama, comedy, sports, music and news – including the Univision Network; UDN (Univision Deportes Network), the No. 1 sports cable network among Hispanics; as well as Fusion Media Group (FMG), a collection of digital-first brands serving young, diverse influencers with content that reflects their shared values and passions. FMG counts with properties such as FUSION, an English-language news, pop culture and satire TV and digital network; The Root, the leading online news, opinion and culture destination for African Americans; Univision Digital; Univision Music; and Univision’s interests in El Rey, The Onion, the nation’s leading comedy and news satire brand; as well as Gizmodo Media Group (GMG), home to category-leading brands focused on technology (Gizmodo), car culture (Jalopnik), contemporary women’s interests (Jezebel), sports (Deadspin), lifestyle (Lifehacker) and gaming (Kotaku). FMG also includes Story House, UCI’s content development and production unit. The Company spans across platforms to engage a digital-savvy audience that over-indexes on mobile, digital video and social—including via its direct-to-consumer video service, Univision NOW.
Prior to Univision, Falco served for more than 30 years in various capacities at NBC. He led the initiative for the NBC-Universal merger and subsequently was named President of the NBC Universal Television Network Group in 2004. Following the merger, Falco combined the advertising sales operations of NBCU’s broadcast and cable units – the first major media company to take that approach. He also was responsible for the group’s commercial and operational functions, including affiliate relations, cable distribution, sales and marketing and other assets, including Telemundo. In February 2000, Falco negotiated the first reverse compensation deal by one of the major broadcast networks. The agreement was a ten-year, $362 million deal with Granite Broadcasting that turned KNTV into the NBC affiliate serving San Francisco and San Jose. This approach changed the historic model so that affiliates would pay the networks for their programming.
Beginning with the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Falco ran NBC’s Olympic operations, a multi-billion dollar business that operated as a separate business group, as well as negotiated the contracts from 1992 through 2006 covering six Olympic game telecasts. He branded NBC television network as the network of the Olympics. He conceived and negotiated two blockbuster deals that surprised the competition, secured exclusive coverage for five consecutive Summer and Winter Olympic Games: 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and became a major profit contributor to the Company. Falco is a multiple Emmy Award recipient for NBC’s Olympic coverage.
Before joining UCI in January 2011, Falco served as chairman and chief executive officer of AOL, Inc. from 2006 to 2009. In this role, he was responsible for setting strategy and overseeing operations as the company transitioned to an advertising-based business model.
Falco holds an M.B.A. in finance and a Bachelor of Business Administration, also in finance, from Iona College. He received an honorary doctorate from Iona College in 2001. Falco sits on the board of Ronald McDonald House and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.|
